The APPG hosts Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of GAVI, for a briefing with Parliamentarians

On Tuesday 26th November, in partnership with the APPG on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases, the APPG for the UN Global Goals hosted Dr Sania Nishtar, the newly-appointed CEO of GAVI, for a Parliamentary briefing on GAVI’s work, and how Parliamentarians in the UK can support it. GAVI works across 57 countries to improve access to vaccinations, and the UK government has been a major donor to it under successive governments.

In a meeting hosted by Baroness Sugg, and APPG Chair Jessica Toale, Parliamentarians had the opportunity to speak with Dr Nishtar on topics including the links between Gavi’s work and climate change, combatting vaccine scepticism, and the role of immunisation in relation to SDG 3.

In attendance were Lord McConnell and Jessica Toale MP, APPG Co-Chairs, as well as Baroness Sugg, Baroness Hayman, Lord Crisp, Lord Trees, Lord Oates, Baroness Hodgson, Lord Stunnell, Steve Race MP and Lauren Sullivan MP. Parliamentarians in attendance agreed on the need for the UK government to continue funding GAVI’s work, and noted the vital importance of vaccine delivery to the achievement of the SDGs.
